This fall, one of comedy’s biggest stars will return to where it all started to film his new comedy special.

Mike Epps will be returning to his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana to film his new Netflix comedy special from the Madam Walker Legacy Center.

“I am excited to not only film my Netflix special in my hometown but also at the historic Madam Walker Theatre where there is so much Black history,” Epps said in a statement. “It’s only right that I shine a light on my city.”

Epps’ still-untitled third Netflix special will be filmed over the course of two shows held at Walker Theatre on Nov. 20. The shows will tape live at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

His previous Netflix specials “Don’t Take It Personal” and “Only One Mike” was released in 2015 and 2019 respectively.

“The Madam Walker Legacy Center is thrilled to host Mike for what is sure to be a legendary show,” Madam Walker Legacy Center President Kristian Stricklen said in a statement. “The city of Indianapolis loves Mike. It is so wonderful that he wants to include this community and our historic building in the television special.”

The new special will continue what has been a strong year for Epps and Indianapolis on the world’s largest streaming platform.

In May, Epps celebrated the release of “The Upshaws,” an original Netflix comedy set in the Circle City that sees Epps serving as both leading man and executive producer.

Epps stars as Bennie Upshaw, the father of a working-class family living in an unspecified part of Indianapolis who runs an auto shop called Bennie’s Garage. “The Upshaws” has already been renewed for a second season on Netflix.

The November event will also see Epps honored for both his career achievements and his philanthropy in the Indianapolis community.

Epps will be inducted into the Madam Walker Walk of Fame, making him the first induction the organization has held since the building renovations began in 2018.

“When we talked about the location for the taping of his new comedy special, Mike didn’t hesitate to say he wanted to tape it in his city,” said local promoter Amp Harris. “He wanted to bring Hollywood to Indianapolis and make history at the same time.”

Tickets for the shows go on sale to the general public at 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24. Ticket prices range from $59 to $99 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com as well as the Madam Walker Theatre box office.

As Epps announces his third Netflix special, fellow Indiana comic Ms. Pat is preparing to film her first this weekend.

Also coming off the heels of a successful streaming comedy that has been picked up for a second season, the Plainfield mom will film a Netflix stand-up at the Atlanta Comedy Theater on Saturday, Sept. 25.
