John Mulaney Recaps His Last Year On Late Night w/ Seth Meyers: Watch

John Mulaney has had an interesting year.

We all know that Mulaney went to rehab last December for cocaine and alcohol treatment, got divorced at some point, and started dating Olivia Munn. But as Mulaney told Seth Meyers on his first television appearance since all of this became public knowledge, there’s even more to the story.

As he sat on the couch, Meyers mentioned that he was there last year, referring to Mulaney’s wild Royal Watch segment on his show in December. Mulaney replied “I’m told I was,” a clear reference to what state of mind he was in around the time of that appearance.

Mulaney started the interview by recapping the last year. In September of last year, he secretly went to the first time, before leaving in October and moving out of the house he shared with his now ex-wife before hosting Saturday Night Live on Halloween. In the subsequent months, he relapsed again at which point Meyers and other friends staged an intervention.

They go in detail with what happened at the intervention. He says as soon as he opened the door and saw everyone standing there, he knew what was up. Mulaney revealed he was two hours late (he thought he was getting dinner with a friend), because hilariously he was at Saturday Night Live getting a haircut. Meyers later called SNL and discovered this was true. At the intervention, Mulaney kept insisting he was sober that night (he wasn’t) before acknowledging that he had a problem and needed to get help. He also added that he didn’t know he wasn’t allowed to be funny, so he was the funniest (and in his recollection best looking) guy at the intervention. When Fred Armisen isn’t doing a bit, he should’ve known something is up.

In December, he went back to rehab. In the spring, he started dating Olivia Munn, whom he actually met previously at Seth Meyers wedding but didn’t start dating until this year. And at the end of the recap, he made the big reveal: They’re expecting a baby! Mulaney then jokes that he hopes the baby at least knows his credits.

The segments ended with a very tender moment where Mulaney and Meyers both declared their love for each other. “You guys saved me from drugs. And Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself and this early journey out of recovery.”
