How did you discover your passion for comedy:
When I was in high school I would stay up late watching Comedy Central and always had a love for late-night specials!

What do you remember most about your first time performing stand-up comedy:
I had 30 of my “closest” friends at the time come and support me. So I felt confident. Also, it was at a brewery…so the beer helped as well.

How would you describe your comedic style:
Relatable, honest, high energy. I’m the friend you meet up with for happy hour and leave feeling energized-kind of comedy.

Describe your process for comedic writing:
Think of an idea, panic, try it on stage, panic, watch the recording, edit, panic some more.

Describe the comedy scene in your area:
Sacramento is competitive/supportive and there is a ton of opportunity for stage time and to grow.

How do you judge success in the world of comedy:
There are obvious successes, like when a joke works all the way to TV credits. But I feel the most successful when people approach me after a show or DM me to tell me I made their week better or I was their favorite or that they NEEDED the laugh and thank me for doing what I do.

Who are some of your comedic peers that you enjoy watching perform or inspire you personally and professionally:
My husband, Drew Shafer, is a comedian as well so I love that we get to share the adventure together. Traveling and performing together is always the best because I’m with family. I also love performing with Sydney Stigerts. She’s hilarious, easy to work with, and just the sweetest person.

What’s been your most memorable moment in comedy:
Hard to pick just one, but my most recent was hosting my first weekend with Live Nation at Sacramento Punch Line for Sheng Wang. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since seeing my first show at Punch when I turned 18…had no idea how to get on that stage, but all these years later, I came full circle.

What have you learned most from your failures in comedy:
Not everyone is going to love you and that’s a good thing! That means your finding your voice and finding your audience! If you bomb a set, great! That audience is gonna leave and you get to go home and keep writing and keep getting better.

How do people react towards you when they realize that you can make people laugh:
Usually smile really big and ask where they can come to a show. It’s also gotten me out of some trouble with the police! Whoops.

Describe what it’s been like building a career in stand-up comedy:
It’s been a roller coaster. I’ve made so many mistakes, but ultimately it’s been fun because I get to share the experience with my comedian husband so when things don’t work out, he understands and we can make it fun together and grow together.

If you could change one thing in the world of comedy, what would it be:
Free meals for comics at every show!

Best advice you’ve ever received from a comedian:
Steve Trevino told me years ago that I need to address “what I am” when I get on stage because people can’t tell and they might not be able to fully focus on my material. Once I started addressing that I’m Haitian and Indian, my sets got bigger reactions. Oh and move the mic stand to the back of the stage. Duh.

If you were releasing a comedy special this week, what would it be called:
“I don’t belong here.”

Funniest encounter you’ve ever had with a celebrity:
I met Ke$ha outside a comedy club in Burbank. I wanted to say something, but I ended up just whispering “I love you” like a creep as she walked past me. She stopped and talked to me and was super nice, thank goodness.

Weirdest place you’ve ever performed any form of comedy:
Biker Bar in Reno, NV.

An Aurora Singh Fun Fact:
I walked onto a Division 1 basketball team in college! Didn’t play a second, so I quit after a year (Laughs).

Where would you like your laughs to take you:
I see myself with a few comedy specials on major streaming services like Netflix and/ or HBO. I also see myself transitioning to comedic acting in major films. I also want to do at least one horror/ drama/ or action film with a serious role just to see if I have range.

What would you tell a potential comedian if they ask you how they can own the laughs:
Move the mic stand out of your way and go up with confidence!

What are your thoughts on the future of comedy:
Oh man, it’s going virtual! The more presence a comic can obtain on social media, the better. Follow me!

If you could write one episode for one classic TV sitcom which show would it be and give a brief detailed sentence on the episode:
Schitt’s Creek, Moira doesn’t get the role, they have to come back and there’s another season.

If you could choose 1 comedy club and 3 comedians to perform with on your perfect comedy show, how would it go:
Choosing just 3 is hard! But I would choose Drew Shafer, Sydney Stigerts, and Steph Sanders and we would perform anywhere with a low ceiling, easy parking, and good lighting.

What’s next for you:
I’m working on 30 solid minutes and will be submitting to higher festivals. My goal is to get a tv credit by the end of the year!

Why should a person always laugh at life:
Because laughing at life is cheaper than therapy. But also, get therapy if you need it…
