How did you discover your passion for comedy:
It has helped me through so many dark times. I don’t see how anyone can live without comedy in their lives.
What do you remember most about your first time performing stand-up comedy:
I remember everyone congratulated me on “popping my cherry”
How would you describe your comedic style:
Clever, dark, and punny
Describe your process for comedic writing:
I sit down and look at the observations that I’ve written in my notes and just started writing until something funny comes out. Then I start reading it out loud and improvising new jokes then write those down.
Describe the comedy scene in your area:
Saturated and Talented.
How do you judge success in the world of comedy:
Try to make the most people you can laugh in the best ways possible.
Who are some of your comedic peers that you enjoy watching perform or inspire you personally and professionally:
I think Espi Rivadeneira has done so much for the NYC comedy scene and works so hard and is so funny so she inspires me. I also think that Destiny Dunkle is by far the funniest person I’ve ever seen perform. She’s going to be a star.
What’s been your most memorable moment in comedy:
The first time I got paid for comedy in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania at Hambones was an unforgettable night.
What have you learned most from your failures in comedy:
I learned that bombing can be fun. Once you realize you’ve lost the audience you can do whatever you want up there to make yourself laugh instead.
How do people react towards you when they realize that you can make people laugh:
People usually get excited to be entertained.
Describe what it’s been like building a career in stand-up comedy:
It has been exciting but scary. I HATE offending people. I’ve learned a lot through my mistakes and want to do my best to make as many people laugh as I can.
If you could change one thing in the world of comedy, what would it be:
That I don’t have to wait tables on the side.
Best advice you’ve ever received from a comedian:
Spread yourself out. Meet as many people as you can.
If you were releasing a comedy special this week, what would it be called:
Rape
Funniest encounter you’ve ever had with a celebrity:
Eric Andre asked me if I was in line at an ice cream truck in LA and I said no. I didn’t realize it was him until I walked away.
Weirdest place you’ve ever performed any forms of comedy:
Nothing too crazy. I’ve definitely gone to a music open mic thinking it was a comedy open mic and people were not amused.
A Laura Barrett Fun Fact:
I was the first Baby Shark in the Baby Shark National Tour.
Where would you like your laughs to take you:
Honestly I’d prefer to be a writer for any comedy network over being a performer. But I’ll take whatever I can get!
What would you tell a potential comedian if they ask you how they can own the laughs:
All you need is honesty and misplaced confidence.
What are your thoughts on the future of comedy:
I have loved watching comedy further develop in all genres of art, music, animation, dance, etc. I think that comedy will forever continue to get smarter and dumber in the best ways possible.
If you could write one episode for one classic TV sitcom which show would it be and give a brief detailed sentence on the episode:
Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Dee Let’s The Gang Go Down On Her
If you could choose 1 comedy club and 3 comedians to perform with on your perfect comedy show, how would it go:
I would go to the Comedy Cellar with Sarah Silverman, Daniel Sloss, and Taylor Tomlinson
What’s next for you:
My current obsession is Twitter.
Why should a person always laugh at life:
It’s the easiest way to get through the hardest times.
