Here’s some more Dave Chappelle news this morning. Next week will be a year since Chappelle put out his 27 minute special last year, 8:46. In the special, which was taped at one of his outdoor shows in Ohio last year, Chappelle talked about the death of George Floyd and the birth of the BLM movement.
And now, Chappelle has teamed up with Third Man Records to produce a vinyl of the special. The vinyl, also titled 8:46, will have a limited run of – fittingly – 846 copies. The B-side will feature poet Amir Sulaiman performing My Insides Out and We Must Win, as well as a track titled White Noise, which is 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence in remembrance of Floyd and all the other victims of police brutality and systemic racism. All proceeds from the vinyl will go towards Chappelle’s high school, Duke Ellington School of the Arts.
“When I was a student at Duke Ellington, the teachers instilled in me the notion of activism through art,” said Chappelle. “We need more soldiers for great causes on the stage.”
The album comes out October 29th, with pre-orders being available here.
