46 years ago this fall, Lorne Michaels created one of arguably the great comedy institutions known as Saturday Night Live. And yesterday, Michaels was announced as one of this year’s recipients of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors.
Among other celebrities that include Bette Midler, Joni Mitchell, and Berry Gordy, Michaels is receiving his honor for creating “the most enduring ‘must-see television’ with Saturday Night Live, a show that is both mirror and muse for life in America.” Of course, in addition to Saturday Night Live, Michaels is also responsible for producing dozen of shows and films including The Tonight Show, Late Night, 30 Rock, Mean Girls, Wayne’s World, Hot Rod, Tommy Boy, A.P. Bio, Portlandia, Kenan, Shrill, Miracle Workers, and countless others.
The ceremony will take place in Washington D.C. on December 5th, and will be broadcast on CBS at a later date.
