Bo Burnham has been having quite a year. He started it off by co-starring in an awards-season staple, Promising Young Woman. In May, he released his quarantine Netflix special, Inside, that has remained prominent in pop culture all summer. And now, he can add a three-time Emmy winner to that track record.
At Sunday’s creative Emmy’s, Burnham went three for four. Burnham, who all along has been the favorite to win, took home the grand prizes for outstanding music direction, writing, and direction of a pre-recorded variety special. And while doing so, by our count, he also broke a record for the most Emmy Awards accumulated by a comedian for the same comedy special in a singular year. (Last year, Chappelle wound up taking two home for Sticks & Stones).
And the streak may not be over yet. Given Sunday’s sweep, the odds still seem well in his favor that he will take home the award for Outstanding Pre-Recorded Variety Special next week at the big ceremony. If he does so, that will put him at four awards against six nominations. And even if he goes home empty-handed, three Emmy Awards for his first time being nominated is nothing to scoff at!
