A second viewing of the Bay Area’s funniest family will soon be upon us.
Earlier this week, the STARZ network officially announced that they would be renewing Blindspotting for a second season.
Based on the critically acclaimed 2018 Lionsgate film of the same name, the Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs comedy-drama sequel series picks up six months after the film.
Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones), who’s nipping at the heels of middle-class life in Oakland, California until Miles (Casal), her partner of 12 years and father of their son, is suddenly incarcerated, leaving her to navigate a chaotic and humorous existential crisis and is forced to move in with Miles’ mother (Helen Hunt) and half-sister (Jaylen Barron).
Casal will be returning as the series’ showrunner for the second season as the renewal comes three months after the 8-episode first season concluded, which is currently Certified Fresh at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love for Season 1, and have been hard at work for the last few months crafting the next chapter of this Bay story,” Casal and Diggs said in a statement. “We are so excited to bring the next season to life with the incredible artistry of our cast and crew, and our partners STARZ and Lionsgate. They done f—ed around and gave us more runway, so welcome back to the ordeal!”
“The award-worthy artistry and creativity that Rafael, Daveed, and the entire Blindspotting team poured into the series took the comedy genre to a new level and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for season two,” President and CEO at Starz, Jeffrey Hirsch said. “The series deservedly garnered critical acclaim and is a wonderful example of our programming mandate focused on unique, authentic stories by, about, and for women and underrepresented audiences.”
The season two release date is expected to be announced by STARZ in early 2022.
The Blindspotting series is executive produced by Jess Wu & Keith Calder of Snoot Entertainment (One Night in Miami), Emily Gerson Saines, Ken Lee, and Tim Palen of Barnyard Projects. The project will reunite Casal, Diggs, Wu, and Calder after they’ve spent a decade working to bring the feature film to life.
