A stand-up comedian and actress born and raised in the coastal city of Portimao, in the South of Portugal. From an early age, she developed a passion for entertainment by being the life of the party at family gatherings and through stage performances during school. As part of We Own The Laughs.com’s Comedian of the Day, have a few laughs and get to know comedian Nacya Marreiro. The Austin, TX native shares with us some of her favorite moments in stand-up comedy and lets us know how she owns the laughs.

How did you discover your passion for comedy:
When I lived in Norway my friends challenged me to do some storytelling in a talent show.

What do you remember most about your first time performing stand-up comedy:
I felt for the first time in my life I belonged somewhere.

How would you describe your comedic style:
Dark Humor/Anecdotal

Describe your process for comedic writing:
Sometimes I think of something funny and I write it down, try to develop and connect it to other stories. Other times I just write as much as I can to stimulate my storytelling, then “clean it up ” and put the funny pieces in the “comedy formula.”

Describe the comedy scene in your area:
Busy

Who are some of your comedic peers that you enjoy watching perform or inspire you personally and professionally:
Christina P is a genius. Love Bill Burr and his amazing energy on stage.

What’s been your most memorable moment in comedy:
When I performed at Laugh Factory in LA, I used to watch their comedy videos on Youtube as a teen.

What have you learned most from your failures in comedy:
Failure doesn’t make you a loser, quitting does.

How do people react towards you when they realize that you can make people laugh:
Surprised

If you could change one thing in the world of comedy, what would it be:
Equality between men and women in the comedy scene.

Best advice you’ve ever received from a comedian:
Be confident and have fun.

If you were releasing a comedy special this week, what would it be called:
Americanized

Funniest encounter you’ve ever had with a celebrity:
In an all-nude sauna… I can’t say names…

Weirdest place you’ve ever performed any form of comedy:
In a private jet… I bombed.

What’s next for you:
Tour and audition as much as I can, in NYC, LA, and Texas.
