Chris Redd’s debut stand-up comedy special Chris Redd: Why Am I Like This?, filmed at the Grandel over the summer, will air Nov. 3 on HBO Max.
Redd, who spent several years of his youth in the St Louis area before his family moved to Chicago, shot two packed shows back-to-back on Aug. 27 for the streaming platform.
The trailer for the special has just been released.
The special is executive produced by Conan O’Brien and directed by Richie Keen, who he worked with on “Kenan” on NBC and “Bust Down” on Peacock.
Shortly after filming the special, Redd announced he was leaving “Saturday Night Live.” Redd won an Emmy Award for writing early during his “Saturday Night Live” run.
Filmed in Redd’s hometown of St. Louis and directed by Richie Keen — who directed Redd previously on sitcoms Bust Down and Kenan — the special will feature the comedian examining “pivotal parts of his life that made him into the person he is today,” according to the HBO Max press release. Among these are his realizations that he’d been chasing “someone else’s dreams — the NBA, SNL, and becoming the next Notorious B.I.G.” and the time he “cried next to a woman twerking with all her might,” which he acts out in the trailer with his signature flair.
Redd and fellow SNL alum Vanessa Bayer never overlapped during their tenures on SNL, but perhaps this is an auspicious time for them to cross paths. With Why Am I Like This? nearing its release, maybe Redd can promote it on Bayer’s podcast How Did We Get Weird?
Redd starred in the cult-classic series “Wet Hot American Summer” and was featured in NBC’s “Will & Grace”, Netflix’s “Love”, Comedy Central’s “Detroiters” and “Comedy Central Stand-Up Presents.” Additionally, Redd was featured as a 2016 Standup New Face at Just for Laughs in Montreal.
