The Sex Lives of College Girls breakout Reneé Rapp took to Instagram to officially announce her exit as a series regular in the upcoming third season of Max’s popular teen comedy series. Rapp portrays Leighton, a wealthy freshman who is one of the leading characters in the show. During the first two seasons, her character arc centered around her coming to terms with her sexuality.
Despite leaving The Sex Lives of College Girls, Deadline brings word that Rapp is still expected to appear in a “handful of episodes” in Season 3. Even though the reason for her exit hasn’t been clarified yet, it might be due to her rising music career as she embarks on an international tour later this year.
“College girls moved me out to L.A. and introduced me to some of my favorite people. Two and a half years later — it’s given me y’all and this community,” Rapp wrote on her Instagram story. “Thank u Mindy, Justin and everyone at Max for believing in me. A lot of queer work gets belittled — but playing Leighton has changed my life. I love who I am 10x more than I did before knowing her. I hope she gave y’all a little bit of that too. She’s such a tiny part of representation but even the tiny parts count. I wouldn’t be half the person I am without her and y’all. I love that bitch more than you know. I’m so excited for this season and I can’t wait for you to see what we have coming for her and the girls.”
The Sex Lives of College Girls is created by Emmy nominee Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, who is also serving as the showrunner. It follows four college roommates at New England’s prestigious Essex College. A bundle of contradictions and hormones, these girls are equal parts lovable and infuriating as they live out their new, free lives on campus.
The series stars Pauline Chalamet (The King of Staten Island), Amrit Kaur (The D Cut, Anarkali), Reneé Rapp (Mean Girls on Broadway), and Alyah Chanelle Scott (The Book of Mormon). Joining them are Mekki Leeper, Christopher Meyer, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Lolo Spencer, Renika Williams, and Mitchell Slaggert.
The Sex Lives of College Girls is executive produced by Howard Klein (The Mindy Project, The Office). It is a production by Kaling International in association with Warner Bros. Television.
