Popular comedian Katie Kusiciel (Katie K.) recently took to social media in regard to a bad experience she had while working with a comedian during a high-profile comedy show in mid-January.
After a hosting/opening performance at The Mic Drop Comedy Club in San Diego, CA, on Thursday, January 18th, Katie posted a video on her personal TikTok page voicing her disapproval of the professionalism she experienced from the show’s headlining comedian that evening.
“I am gonna tell you something egregious that happened to me last night at a show,” Kusiciel said in her original video.
She would use her platform, which features more than 1.8 million views and thousands of comments, to explain how she was the opening act for a popular comedian and claimed he showed up almost 30 minutes late and in the middle of her act.
Katie would also share her thoughts on the headliner’s performance and crowd response to his set that evening. Immediately when he got on stage, she said he started ripping Kusiciel to shreds for the first five to 10 minutes of his set, saying she shouldn’t have been his opener, that she didn’t belong or fit in with his crowd, and called her a “substitute teacher.”
Kusiciel claims that the comic specifically said her material should have included “Ratchet Shit.”
“I don’t really even know what that is supposed to mean because that’s not authentic or genuine to me, and I’m not going to try to pander to an audience just because we come from different backgrounds,” Kusiciel said.
Kusiciel told the club what happened and left. Instead of her closing out the show, they told her they’d do it “however he saw fit.”
“People like this give stand-up comics a bad name.” Kusiciel said.
Katie is best known for her appearances on America’s Got Talent Season 16, America’s Got Talent Extreme and Squished on Amazon Prime. She is no stranger to fun game shows with multiple appearances on GSN. Kusiciel also a mainstay on the comedy festival scene winning “Best Of Fest” at Big Pine Comedy Festival, SLO Comedy Festival and Burbank Comedy Festival just to name a few. She’s the host of the popular podcast Mostly True Opinions featured in the Top 1000 comedy podcasts on iHeartRadio. In 2023, she released her latest comedy album titled I AM THE TRASH.
Throughout the video, the Los Angeles comedian kept the comedian’s name unknown, but it later emerged that she was referring to viral star Dyon Brooks, aka Mojobrookzz.
At the start of his career, Brooks utilized Facebook and Instagram to demonstrate his comedic talent by writing and performing video skits. Some of his popular work includes his nine-series skit titled “Thawt in my House,” and mom and grand-mom impersonations, which maintained his popularity because many people can relate to the situations. It was the “Mr James”(Sugardaddy) character that proved as one of Brooks first major breaks online. This character has thrust Brooks into very deserved spotlight and helped him gain national attention and a bigger following. He has gained a following of over 500,000 people via social media. 100,000 on Instagram, 340,000 on Facebook, 8,000 on Twitter and 50,000 on Snapchat. Brooks has hosted events as well as performed alongside popular musical artist and comedians as follows, Lloyd, Jacquess, Plies, DC Young Fly, Micheal Blackson, Deray Davis, Jess Hilarious and Lil Duval.
Once he received information regarding Katie’s video, Brooks would quickly share his response to the “Unprofessional” claims, detailing his version of the events in a video posted to his TikTok page.
He addressed Kusiciel’s video point-by-point and had screenshots and a video of the set to support his version.
First, he said that he wasn’t late to his own show. Because it was a sold-out event, the start time was pushed from 7 to 7:30 to ensure everybody was in their seats on time. Brooks said he was in the green room before Kusiciel went on stage.
Then, he addressed how her jokes landed with the crowd. Despite her perception, he thought the crowd was lukewarm before he came out and showed a video of Kusiciel appearing to try to get their energy up.
“Yea bro, room was hella silent.” an unnamed person wrote in a text to Brooks.
He went on to explain that because the crowd wasn’t hyped by her performance or intro, he had to introduce himself and get the crowd’s energy up. He started off with a few jokes about Kusiciel’s set, pointing out how strange it was for her to tell a crowd of Black people to get “buck wild,” making a joke about how he wasn’t giving refunds and referring to her as a substitute teacher.
Clearly, it’s a case of how someone feels they were treated. The Mic Drop Comedy Club has no comment on the situation, and it’s highly unlikely that neither Brooks nor Kusiciel will request to be featured on the same show or event again.
