A Donkey movie is officially in the works, and Eddie Murphy will star in the film as his iconic Shrek character, the actor recently revealed.
During a recent conversation with Collider, Murphy was asked about the world of Shrek and what DreamWorks Animation has in store for the franchise. Murphy then revealed that not only had production on Shrek 5 begun already, but a donkey movie was also planned for after.
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago,” Murphy said. “I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”
When asked whether or not the movies were being made simultaneously or would release close together, Murphy clarified that the Donkey movie would happen sometime after the fifth Shrek film.
“No, not at the same time. I started recording Shrek, I think it’s coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next,” said Murphy.
Talks of a fifth Shrek and Donkey movie have been happening for a few months now, with Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri revealing that Shrek 5 was in the works last year and Eddie Murphy talking about a Donkey film around the same time.
