BET+ has given a Season 2 order to Churchy, the comedy series from standup comedian Kevin “KevOnStage” Fredericks and LeBron James’ SpringHill.
The pickup comes as BET prepares to premiere the series on its linear cable network next Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 9 p.m. ET.
According to BET+, the series was the No. 1 scripted comedy series on the platform during its debut week (Feb. 15). “We congratulate the amazing writers, cast, crew, and our production partners for creating such an entertaining first season,” Jason Harvey, exec VP and head of BET+ said in a statement. “‘Churchy’ blends humor and heart around the center all of which resonated tremendously with viewers. We are excited to see where the second season will take us.”
The show is inspired by the comedy of Fredericks, who plays Corey Carr Jr., a character that finds himself at a crossroads when his father’s mega-church decides not to let him inherit its leadership.
Instead, Corey moves to Lubbock, Texas, to build his own ministry. “However, after quickly stumbling upon the realization that small-town church life is an entirely different ball game, Corey slowly accepts that the path to spiritual leadership might just be funnier and more profound than any sermon could ever teach,” according to the show description.
Fredericks will return for Season 2 in his role as the new pastor; Season 1 also starred Anthony Elfoniza, Lexi Allen, London Solomon, Mark J. P. Hood and Shani Shockley. Season 2 cast includes series regulars Quin Walters and Tahir Moore, as well as appearances by Nic Few, Tony Baker and Tabitha Brown.
Kevin “KevOnStage” Fredericks and Melissa Fredericks are exec producers for KevOnStage Studios, while LeBron James, Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson and Lezlie Wills are executive producers for SpringHill. Richard A. Washington and David Murphy are the writers for Season 2.
“A heartfelt thank you to BET for their unwavering support, SpringHill for amazing partnership, and to our incredible audience for tuning in and making this journey possible,” Kevin Fredericks said in a statement. “The cast and I can’t wait to bring you even more comedy and a bigger, better show.”
The “Churchy” renewal joins an ongoing BET+ comedy roster including “Average Joe,” which also has been renewed for a second season. Comedies still awaiting their fates include “The Ms. Pat Show,” “Diarra from Detroit” and “Tyler Perry’s Bruh.” (Perry’s “Zatima” just returned for Season 3.)
