“You want me to put my name on your show?” Freestyle Digital Media has revealed an official trailer for a comedy film titled Stealing Jokes, a meta-comedy about stand-up comics getting revenge.
This is written and directed by comedian Mike Young, who is also originally from Detroit, and it was filmed in Detroit; this release is timed to his new Rocket Comedy tour this month before hitting VOD in November to watch at home.
Comedian Jake Burman and friends head out on tour. After getting stiffed for their pay on their first gig they rob the venue which sets the stage for a hilarious Ocean’s Eleven-esque romp through the comedy underworld. Young says: “I’ve always wanted to make a film about comedians getting their due.
After years opening for Bob Saget and seeing firsthand the global influence of stand-up comedy, I thought what better way to tell the story than through an underdog tale about standup comics.” The film stars Jeff Dye, Dustin Ybarra, Ha Ha Davis, Luke Null, and many other comedians you may (or may not) recognize.
Stealing Jokes centers on a comedian and his friends who, after setting out on a comedy tour, get bilked out of their promised fees on the first night. They decide to rob the venue, leading to a heist involving the underworld of the comedy scene. Stealing Jokes is a comedy written and directed by American comedian / indie filmmaker Mike Young, director of the other very tiny indie films My Man is a Loser and A Stand Up Guy previously. Produced by Jeremy Alter and Michael Manasseri. It was filmed mostly in Detroit. THR adds: “The release is timed to the start of Young’s Rocket Comedy tour, which launches its 25-city run in Phoenix on October 11th. Young and the roster of comedians will end the tour in Detroit.” Freestyle Digital Media will release Stealing Jokes direct-to-VOD starting November 1st, 2024 this fall.
