Acclaimed comedian Michelle Buteau joins us with the cast of her hit Netflix series, co-created by Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, Survival of the Thickest, for a post-screening conversation.
Buteau, Tone Bell, Tasha Smith, and Peppermint discuss the making of the second season — what’s new in the lives of Mavis and her friends, how Buteau and the cast created their indelible characters, making comedy that’s as tender as it is hilarious, stories from the set, and more.
The Netflix rom-com centers on Mavis Beaumont (Buteau), who is newly single and looking for romance, with the scripted series inspired by Buteau’s book of the same name.
“Big girl, we ain’t just the moment. We the movement, honey,” Mavis exclaims when back in New York City at one point in in the trailer. The second season teaser has Mavis working hard to grow her brand and establish herself as a fashion stylist. “We’re going to be in Harper’s Bazaar!” Mavis yells out as she and her chosen family face the ebbs and flows of creative challenge to find success.
Tone Bell as Khalil and Tasha Smith as Marley return alongside Buteau as series leads.
The guest star cast includes Maroune Zotti as Luca, Liza Treyger as Jade, Peppermint as her drag queen self, Alecsys Proctor-Turner and Garcelle Beauvais as Natasha.
Series creator Buteau also wrote and executive produces the comedy, with Danielle Sanchez-Witzel also as a creator and showrunner and executive producer, alongside Amy Aniobi. Grace Edwards also wrote the series and executive produces along with Alli Reich and Ravi Nandan for A24, and Anne Hong and Grace Edwards.
