Peacock will not be moving forward with new installments of the freshman comedy series Laid, sources reveal to Deadline.
Laid, starring and executive produced by Stephanie Hsu, premiered on December 19 with all 8 episodes available to stream. While Laid boasted a talented ensemble cast, a catchy title, and a must-stream playlist, the rom-com failed to make the Nielsen streaming rankings, nor did it generate as much buzz as other projects from co-showrunners, executive producers, and writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna. It is as yet unknown if the show will be shopped around.
The 8-episode series follows Ruby Yao (Hsu), a woman who finds out her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her sex timeline to confront her past in order to move forward. Laid is a new twist on the rom-com where the answer to “why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?” is a resounding “Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.”
Season 1 ended with the return of Ruby’s (Hsu) estranged father (François Chau), which could have provided a way into Season 2. The hex that she worked so hard to transfer throughout the show also came back in the last beats of the finale when Finneas O’Connell’s character, Jason, died after he seemed happy and healthy at a marathon where Ruby and AJ (Zosia Mamet) checked on him before Ruby slept with Isaac (Tommy Martinez). This twist, combined with Ruby’s father’s reveal that the curse is generational, forms the cliffhanger ending of the first and only season of the comedy series.
The cast also includes Michael Angarano in a principal role, and key guest stars Andre Hyland, Kate Berlant, David Denman, John Early, Ettore “Big E” Ewen, Chloe Fineman, Olivia Holt, Simu Liu, Finneas O’Connell, and Alexandra Shipp.
