In a recent Q&A with Deadline, executive producer Kelsey Grammer, who recently rebooted his classic show Frasier, expressed his eagerness to see a revival of “Girlfriends.”

“I would love to reboot Girlfriends. Of course, it would probably be a different kind of show, but we got ‘The Game’ back on, and that was wonderful. I don’t know if Paramount+ is gonna grab another season of that, but you never know,” Grammer said when asked about any updates on the ‘Girlfriends’ reboot.

Unfortunately, The Game on Paramount+ has since been canceled.

Grammer, who executive produced Girlfriends, continued, “I think they should because I know many people who love that show and love those characters and would like to see them continue. We’ll see what happens. But yeah, I would love to reboot ‘Girlfriends,’ and I would love to see Tracee [Ellis Ross] in that role again. She was terrific in that. The show was a wonderful opportunity to see all those young women start out. It’s such a beautiful ensemble effort, and I was very proud to be connected to that.

The show, created by Mara Brock Akil, starred Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White, and Jill Marie Jones as a group of four Black professionals and friends in their early thirties. The show ran for eight seasons from 2000 to 2008 before it came to an abrupt end due to the Writers Guild of America strike.

This isn’t the first time Grammer spoke about wanting to bring back ‘Girlfriends.’ During a 2022 interview with E!, he talked about not being able to give the show a “proper finale — it broke my heart. Oh my god, I love those characters.”

“It has not left my imagination, the idea of maybe bringing one back and trying to button it up at least,” Kelsey said. “What the heck? Streaming platforms are doing a lot of stuff like this. I would love to see [The Game] twinned with another stab at those gals. I’d love to give it the proper send-off it always deserved because they were fantastic.”

Just about everyone involved wants ‘Girlfriends’ to get the updated makeover, but it has been 15 years now, and unfortunately, no immediate plans for a ‘Girlfriends’ reboot are in the works.
