The comedian and actor opens up about his Detroit upbringing, his complicated relationship with his father, navigating Hollywood and the mindset that keeps him grounded.

Comedian and actor Clayton Thomas, better known as CT, joins Na’im Lynn for a deeply personal and revealing new episode of DMC, opening up about the childhood experiences, family relationships and hard-earned lessons that have shaped the man and entertainer he is today.

Known for bringing undeniable energy and personality to his comedy, Thomas shows a much more vulnerable side during his conversation with Lynn. The Detroit native reflects on growing up surrounded by realities that forced him to mature quickly, including witnessing a tragic neighborhood murder at just nine years old. He also recalls the culture shock that came with eventually moving to the suburbs and how those dramatically different environments influenced his personality and contributed to his tendency to become a people pleaser.

The conversation becomes especially emotional as Thomas discusses his complicated relationship with his father. He recalls finally confronting his dad about the feelings of abandonment he carried for years and the closure the two were able to find before his father was diagnosed with cancer just one month later.

Thomas also shares the powerful experience of honoring his father during his appearance on All Def Comedy before his passing, offering a reminder of how comedy can become a vehicle for processing some of life’s most difficult experiences.

Family remains at the center of the conversation as Thomas discusses his evolving relationship with his mother. As an adult, he has had to learn the importance of establishing boundaries, standing his ground and recognizing that personal growth sometimes requires changing the dynamics of even your closest relationships.

Beyond the personal revelations, Thomas and Lynn turn their attention toward the realities of working in entertainment. The two explore the often-thin line separating confidence from arrogance, the anxiety that accompanies Hollywood auditions and the challenges that can arise when creative disagreements happen between friends.

Thomas provides perspective on how performers can remain confident in their abilities without allowing ego to interfere with relationships or opportunities. He also speaks candidly about the mental pressure surrounding auditions and the uncertainty that comes with pursuing success in an industry where rejection is unavoidable.

Through every chapter of his journey, Thomas says his greatest sources of stability have remained faith, gratitude and service.

He explains the philosophy behind what he calls his “Summer of Service” mentality, an approach centered on shifting attention away from himself and toward finding ways to positively impact others. For Thomas, staying connected to gratitude and purpose has become an essential part of remaining grounded while navigating the unpredictable nature of entertainment.

With Na’im Lynn creating space for an honest and unrestricted conversation, the latest edition of DMC goes well beyond comedy. It becomes a discussion about confronting childhood trauma, repairing complicated family relationships, establishing boundaries, developing genuine confidence and discovering the kind of purpose that exists beyond career accomplishments.
