How did you discover your passion for comedy:
I never was able to express my feelings or deal with hard situations in a serious manner, I could only talk about things if I was making fun of it. At a young age, I realized I loved making people laugh. Comedy was the only thing I wanted to watch on tv growing up, until now, I’m currently obsessed with thrillers. I have no idea what that means… or if I answered the question.

What do you remember most about your first time performing stand-up comedy:
Just being so honest with all my stories mainly because everyone watching was a stranger. And realizing wow I may be single forever doing this and that’s okay because this is amazing!

How would you describe your comedic style:
Self-deprecating and painfully honest.

Describe your process for comedic writing:
A lot of times I tell stories to my friends & family without them knowing it’s a joke I’m working on just to see what they react to. And then I sit and write from there. Things have to come to me naturally, I can’t sit and force myself to write.

Describe the comedy scene in your area:
Every area in Los Angeles is so different, so performing in Silver Lake one night is a completely different world than West Hollywood. Keeps you on your toes.

How do you judge success in the world of comedy:
Making money doing what you love, and having an audience that relates to you and loves your work.

Who are some of your comedic peers that you enjoy watching perform or inspire you personally and professionally:
Betsy Cox, Diosa, & Robby Valls are some of my favorites to watch!

What’s been your most memorable moment in comedy:
I did a show in this huge warehouse and no one was there for comedy and I got heckled really bad! Right when I walked on stage people started yelling “go home!” and I ended up winning the audience over. It’s like a nightmare turned good. Never want to relive that though, it was intense. Thankful for the tequila I had right before.

What have you learned most from your failures in comedy:
Nothing is the end of the world, you just gotta keep going and you only get better & smarter from past failures.

How do people react towards you when they realize that you can make people laugh:
Normally people just start pitching me joke ideas and tell me they secretly want to do comedy. When a guy doesn’t tell me that, I’m shocked.

Describe what it’s been like building a career in stand-up comedy:
It’s been a roller coaster, I haven’t done it long, but I feel like I’ve learned a lot real quick.

If you could change one thing in the world of comedy, what would it be:
More women on the line up!

Best advice you’ve ever received from a comedian:
Don’t listen to advice from other people. Which I found helpful. When you start doing stand up everyone is telling you this or that and it gets confusing. Do listen to advice on things like “don’t run the light” but not things like “you need to have more energy or look more like this.”

If you were releasing a comedy special this week, what would it be called:
Should of Been Dead

Funniest encounter you’ve ever had with a celebrity:
I was working at a bar and everyone was super excited because Andy Garcia was there. I chimed in and was like “OMG I love Andy Garcia where is he?” Everyone stared at me for a minute and this guy said, “you were having a full conversation with him when you put on his wristband, remember you were having the hardest time getting it on.” I had no idea!

Weirdest place you’ve ever performed any form of comedy:
On a ranch for a bunch for cowboys.

A Lorraine Lopez Fun Fact:
I won the best marcher award in band in high school. I took marching band very seriously.

Where would you like your laughs to take you:
Travel the world performing, comedy special, writing tv/film, thriving podcast, perhaps hosting a funny travel food show…

What would you tell a potential comedian if they ask you how they can own the laughs:
Take care of yourself mentally, whether that is meditating or whatever works for you. Stand-up is hard on your mind and energy. Be around people that make you happy.

What are your thoughts on the future of comedy:
Great! People are so excited for comedy after this pandemic. We also now have really cool outdoor shows that have become the new norm.

If you could write one episode for one classic TV sitcom which show would it be and give a brief detailed sentence on the episode:
I would write an episode for “I Love Lucy” where Lucy and Ethel get hypnotized and we see their past lives.

What’s next for you:
Currently doing the second season of my podcast “Lorraine Lopez Loves…” and looking forward to more live shows!

Why should a person always laugh at life:
You got to laugh sometimes to heal. Best medicine in the world!
