Jerry Seinfeld is writing “Unfrosted” for Netflix

After a show as successful as Seinfeld was, it would only make sense that Seinfeld would go on to star in films, right? Well, to date, he has only made one film, Bee Movie, which was animated. But that’s all about to change.

It’s been announced that Netflix has won a bidding war for a new film from Jerry Seinfeld. Co-written by Seinfeld, Spike Feresten and Barry Marder, Unfrosted is a film inspired by a popular joke from Seinfeld’s stand-up act, the “world-shattering” invention of Pop-Tarts.

“Stuck at home watching endless sad faces on TV, I thought this would be a good time to make something based on pure silliness,” Seinfeld said in a statement. “So we took my Pop-Tart stand-up bit from my last Netflix special and exploded it into a giant, crazy comedy movie.”

Feresten also chimed in on the idea’s origins on his Facebook page. “If over the years you ever saw Jerry and I on the porch at the Malibu Kitchen laughing, there’s a very good chance we were talking about this idea. Then when the pandemic hit we were faced with a decision. Do we sit home, watch TV and put on weight? Or do we get the gang together on Zoom and write something that will hopefully make people laugh and put on weight. We chose the latter. A movie about a toastable breakfast treat we could eat while we wrote about it. And I know what you’re thinking… But Spike, will there be cars in this Netflix Pop Tart movie? The answer is yes. Period correct, curated choices. We won’t let you down. More to come soon…”

It makes total sense that Netflix would manage to win the bidding war for the film, given Seinfeld’s relationship with the streamer. After having not produced a traditional stand-up special since the 1980’s, Seinfeld has created two for the streamer, Jerry Before Seinfeld and 23 Hours To Kill. Not to mention they also picked up Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee and Seinfeld.
