Name: Evan Lopez
Hometown: Austin, TX
Instagram/Twitter/Facebook/Snapchat/Tik-Tok: @IamEvanLopez
Years in Comedy: 5
Haven’t we seen you somewhere before: You can catch me on OFTV’s comedy series LMAOF: Austin
Comedic Influences: Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Sinbad, Bill Burr, Mark Normand, Norm Macdonald, Dave Chappelle, and more!
Favorite Comedy Album: Alright, don’t judge me hard on this one, but I loved Dane Cook’s Retaliation. Which I’ll never apologize for. I just didn’t listen to many comedy albums, and I had this one. But listen. This is a solid album.
Favorite Comedy Special: Dave Chappelle “Killin’ Them Softly”
Favorite Comedy Movie: Honestly, I’ve probably watched THE HANGOVER the most other than Adam Sandler movies. But my favorite movie might be TROPIC THUNDER.
Favorite Comedy TV Show: MMmmmmm “Friends”…..I’m joking; I have many favorite shows, but “Eastbound and Down” might take the cake.
Favorite Comedic Character: Kenny Powers baby!
Favorite City to Perform In: Honestly, I love small towns outside of big cities.
Favorite Topics to Joke About: I like to think of myself as a mixed bag! Try to have a diverse group of topics that can tell a whole story.
Favorite Type of Audience for a Comedy Show: Honestly, what is amazing about the puzzle of doing standup is the different perspectives of audiences. I notice some jokes work on older crowds that don’t work on younger ones and vice versa. Sometimes killer jokes bomb, and bad jokes kill. It’s a wild thing, but I love the unpredictability of it all! Overall, I love a crowd that knows these are jokes and is along for the ride. A couple of times, I have had audience members come up to me after jokes that were very mild, and it was a wild experience. I think laughing is great medicine. If we can laugh at something, we can fix it or heal it.
Favorite Comedy Club: I love Cap City in Austin! Out of all the places I have performed, the red room has some of the best sound and space to perform in!

How did you discover your passion for comedy:
As a kid, I realized humor was going to be my way to get attention. I used to ask my family when I was like five if they got their ticket for the gun show at night and would pretend to punch their tickets, then I would go upstairs and return a couple of minutes later and do a flex off in my tighty whities for them. It was always a big hit.

What do you remember most about your first time performing stand-up comedy:
I prepared for weeks rehearsing my first 5 minutes. Memorized it all front to back to make sure I wouldn’t blank out and just be standing there. I didn’t forget my set, but I don’t remember much. I have a weird photographic memory of it, just snapshots of being on stage and being like, WOAH, this is happening, but I don’t actually remember the set.

How would you describe your comedic style:
I am still figuring that out. I always want everyone to have a good time, and I think my style of comedy parallels that on stage. I don’t want to be a comedian who is like you are all here to witness my art. But more of like I want us all to have a good time. Don’t heckle, but let’s have fun.

Describe your process for comedic writing:
I am boring. I have a 30-minute timer every morning after coffee and reading for a bit that I set and force myself to go through bits and write new material. I almost record myself while driving, talking through ideas and bits. I also record and film my sets to see if I riff anything or get new tags. I also like doing solo podcasts where I go off on tangents. That can be found on Seven Minutes In Evan Podcast. Shameless plug.

Describe the comedy scene in your area:
Boomtown! Austin is the hottest scene currently for comedians. All the comedians that were hungry moved here in 2021, and it made an exciting, motivated & hungry scene! I love it because it forces you to get better.

How do you judge success in the world of comedy:
Making people laugh and also having the respect of peers.

Who are some of your comedic peers that you enjoy watching perform or inspire you personally and professionally:
Honestly, I love watching most of the Austin scene from Dean Stanfield, Spencer Cavins, Genivieve, Casey Rocket, Miles Johnson & more.

What’s been your most memorable moment in comedy:
Honestly, filming the “LMAOF: Austin” special with OFTV has been my highlight moment since I started performing comedy.

What have you learned most from your failures in comedy:
The worst bombs teach you the most; great sets are fun, but the bombs are where you learn the most.

How do people react toward you when they realize that you can make people laugh:
Ugh. They ask me to tell them a joke.

Describe building a career in stand-up comedy:
It’s like trying to make a building out of melting chocolate. You’re panicking and things just aren’t holding together. I am joking, but it has its ups and downs. I think the name of the game is attrition. You have to keep writing and getting on stage as much as possible. P.S Originally, in this metaphor, I would have it be poop instead of chocolate but toned it down to be professional.

If you could change one thing in the world of comedy, what would it be:
People understand that jokes are jokes and life is short, and in my personal life, laughing at myself and my struggles is medicine.

Best advice you’ve ever received from a comedian:
Respect the audience. They paid to see you. Don’t half-ass it. My overall best advice I always think about wasn’t from a comedian but from an athlete who said, “Don’t let the highs get you too high and the lows get ya too low”

If you were releasing a comedy special this week, what would it be called:
“Feral”

Funniest encounter you’ve ever had with a celebrity:
I ran into Mr. T and Ice T in the same airport, which was plain silly to me. Both were great, and Mr. T took pictures w/ me and was so dope. Ice T was with Coco and signed a random piece of paper for me… How weird was it getting autographs?…

Weirdest place you’ve ever performed any form of comedy:
I opened up a show for a flamenco show once where the audience had no idea that a comedian was performing… They just handed me a mic and told me to go on stage for 200 people who thought flamenco dancers were coming out, but it was just me.

An Evan Lopez Fun Fact:
I had pet pigeons as a kid and loved them very much. I get happy when I see pigeons. Birds in general. I know way too many different kinds of birds. If you look outside and see a bird right now, I probably know what kind it is.

Where would you like your laughs to take you:
I want to perform all over the world and hit the biggest venues. Just to check them off the list, and I want to be able to travel and tell my giggles everywhere. Honestly, I just want to not stress about spending money on food and traveling while doing what I love. Also getting my pigeons premium feed.

What would you tell a potential comedian if they ask you how they can own the laughs:
Ain’t nothing to it but to do it. Comedy has no real shortcuts when it comes to really getting laughs, which is what I love. You can’t fake it. You just have to write your first five minutes and get on stage as much as possible.

What are your thoughts on the future of comedy:
Comedy is in a great place, and I think it’s only going to get better for independent artists.

If you could write ONE episode for ONE classic TV sitcom, which show would it be and give a brief detailed sentence on the episode:
I’d rewrite the Game of Thrones finale. Not just for me but for everyone who suffered from what those writers did to ALL OF US.

If you could choose ONE comedy club and THREE comedians to perform with on your perfect comedy show, how would it go:
The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, CA w/ Eddie Murphy, Bill Burr & Robin Williams. Honestly, I would just want to see all three of them on stage, sitting together and talking with the crowd.

What’s next for you:
God, that is such a big question. Honestly, my dog needs to be walked and is so upset right now. I don’t know if she will ever emotionally recover.

Why should a person always laugh at life:
Life is short, and we are spinning through space insanely fast. Laugh and enjoy it and do the things you love because it goes by quickly, and who cares what people think?
