Rob Reiner, director, writer and star of This Is Spinal Tap, is talking about the sequel to the mockumentary and revealing when the follow-up film is set to start filming.

“We’re making a sequel,” Reiner said during an appearance on the RHLSTP with Richard Herring podcast.

“We’re going to start shooting in the end of February and everybody is back.”

Reiner also teased that Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks and “a few other surprises” would be making cameos in the film.

This Is Spinal Tap was released in 1984 and it starred Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer as members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap. Reiner played the character of Marty DiBergi, a filmmaker in the mockumentary that chronicles the lives of the band during their American leg of the tour.

Following the relaunch of Castle Rock’s film division, Reiner set forth a sequel to This Is Spinal Tap with the original cast members set to reprise their roles 40 years later.

“The plan is to do a sequel that comes out on the 40th anniversary of the original film and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one? For so many years, we said, ‘nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story,” Reiner told Deadline back in May 2022 about the plans for the mockumentary sequel.
