After taking home the Golden Globe for best supporting female actor in a TV series for her Season 2 performance of The BearAyo Edebiri finally received her Emmy recognition for Season 1 on Monday and said the win only happened because of her parents’ support.

“This is a show about family and found family and real family, and my parents are here tonight and I’m making them sit far away from me because I’m a bad kid but thank you,” she said. “Thank you so much for loving me and letting me feel beautiful and Black and proud of all of that. I love you so much. Probably not a dream to immigrate to this country and have your daughter go “I wanna do improv,” but you are real ones.”

Edebiri beat out Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Janelle James (Abbott Elementary), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), Juno Temple (Ted Lasso), Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) and Jessica Williams (Shrinking) for tonight’s win.

Heading into the night, The Bear was heavy favorite in all major categories and this marked the show’s first win of the night. Her castmates Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach later also won in the acting categories.

Even though The Bear premiered in 2022 and already earned several accolades, this was the first time the Emmys have been able to properly honor the show. The recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused even further delays as this year’s show moved from its usual September airdate to January.
