On the anniversary of the release of arguably the best comedy special of her career, stand-up comedian/actor Anjelah Johnson-Reyes sits down and discusses her work of art one year later. She shares stories from Say I Won’t, along with secrets that many of us may not know. Johnson returned to her YouTube roots with an uproarious comedy hour that showcases her life, including her move from California to Nashville, coming to grips with getting older and embracing the different stages of marriage, family, and friendship. She financed, produced, and fully owned the production.

Many consider it the best comedy special of 2023. Currently, it has amassed over 4.5 million views.

Anjelah Johnson-Reyes: An actress, comedian, author, and former NFL cheerleader, Johnson-Reyes first garnered national attention as a cast member on FOX’s MADtv in the late 2000s. Her characters included a Vietnamese nail salon employee named Mỹ Linh/Tammy and a rude fast food employee turned music star named Bon Qui Qui (the latter of which has become popular outside of Johnson’s short stint on the show).

By the end of the decade, Comedy Central would release her first stand-up comedy special entitled Anjelah Johnson: That’s How We Do It.

The success from the special would immediately turn Anjelah into one of the hottest latin comedy acts in the country. Since then, Johnson-Reyes has released three more comedy specials including Homecoming ShowAnjelah Johnson: Not Fancy, and Mahalo & Goodnight.

She also appeared in the films Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Our Family Wedding, and provided her voice for the live-action adaptation of Marmaduke.

In 2022, Johnson-Reyes released her first book titled My Who Do I Think I Am?Stories of Chola Wishes and Caviar Dreams, a hilarious and thoughtful memoir that explores questions of identity, belonging, and her two dreams as a kid: to be an actress and to be a chola.
