Kill the Butterflies is a part stand-up, part documentary special by Steve Hofstetter that uses comedy and real-world interviews to explore anxiety—represented by the metaphorical “butterflies in your stomach.” It’s heartfelt, insightful, and aims to help both the comedian and the audience better understand and articulate mental-health experiences through laughter.

Playing on the idea of anxiety rather than anything literal, Hofstetter explains, “butterflies in your stomach” refers to anxiety, and the show is about mental health and finding ways to articulate internal struggles.

In interviews, Hofstetter reflects that he didn’t recognize his own anxiety until his 40s and hopes that the show helps others understand and express their feelings sooner. The tone is both funny and empathetic, aiming to demystify anxiety through humor and self-reflection. As one critic put it: this newest show is “encouraging, hilarious, and the best of Hofstetter yet!”
