While in New York to promote his upcoming film, stand-up comedian/actor Marlon Wayans sits down with Power 105 The Breakfast Club.

Early in the interview, the hosts joked about misidentifying Wayans as a rapper because of his style. Wayans humorously addressed past accusations or controversies, with self-deprecation and deflection, but also used them as moments to express deeper truths. He acknowledged the emotional weight of loss: he’s lost many loved ones in recent years, and that grief deeply informs his art and perspective. He also spoke about change: holding space for people to evolve (e.g. himself, his children, public figures). Wayans expressed a belief that his best years are ahead, despite decades in the business. Wayans spoke about his siblings (Damon, Keenan, Shawn, Kim) and how growing up in a creative, comedy-driven family influenced his path.

The interview delved into his evolving relationship with his trans child. He admitted to initial hesitation, worries about societal judgment, and then evolving toward acceptance, understanding, and unconditional love. Wayans revealed details about his stand-up journey and specials. At one point, he spoke about naming a special Skittles (or another working title) and wanting to “clear the canvas” to create new works.

Wayans discussed his leading role in Him, a horror-oriented film produced by Jordan Peele, in which he plays a legendary quarterback named Isaiah White. He described this as one of his first major serious/dramatic roles, a departure from the comedic and parody work he’s more known for. For the role, Wayans spoke about the mental, emotional, and physical preparation he underwent—he likened the process to “uncaging” aspects of himself and “tethering” his own life to that of Isaiah’s.
