Peacock has renewed Twisted Metal for a third season, with David Reed (The Boys, Supernatural) taking over as showrunner and executive producer following Michael Jonathan Smith’s exit.
Smith was with the show for its first two seasons and has now “concluded his involvement as showrunner and executive producer,” according to the streamer.
The half-hour Twisted Metal is based on the classic PlayStation game series.
Season 1 follows John Doe (Anthony Mackie), a motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
With the help of Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz), a badass ax-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown (Joe Seanoa/Will Arnett) who drives an all-too-familiar ice cream truck.
Season 2 follows the revelations in the Season 1 finale. John and Quiet find themselves entering the deadly Twisted Metal tournament, a sinister demolition derby hosted by a mysterious man known as Calypso (Anthony Carrigan). As they try to survive an onslaught of dangerous new foes and familiar faces alike, including the murderous clown Sweet Tooth, things get complicated for John when he reunites with his long-lost sister, the vigilante Dollface (Tiana Okoye).
The Season 2 finale sets up the Season 3 conflict in the post-credit scene, as John and Quiet prepare to take on Calypso after he frames them for murdering the spectators at the Twisted Metal tournament, starting a war between the Insiders and the Outsiders.
According to Peacock, Twisted Metal Season 2 “registered 993 million minutes viewed” on the streaming service, becoming their “second highest-reaching original returning scripted season.”
Reed will executive produce the series alongside Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Arnett and Marc Forman (Electric Ave) also EP with Mackie (Make It Gravy Productions); Jason Spire (Inspire Entertainment); Peter Principato (Artists First); Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions; and Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business.
The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Reed is a WGA Award-nominated writer, director and producer who currently is a writer/executive producer on Prime Video’s hit series The Boys. His additional writing credits include Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, The Magicians, Aquarius, Revolution and Supernatural. Reed is under an overall TV deal at Sony Pictures Television.
Reed began his career as a writers assistant on Battlestar Galactica, while writing low-budget creature features for Syfy. In addition to his TV work, he’s also written novels, comic books and video games. He is repped by WME, Heroes and Villains Entertainment, and Jackoway Tyerman.
