Call Me Kat is the latest popular series to be getting the ax, with Fox calling time on the comedy show after three seasons.
News of the cancelation was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter and comes immediately after the season finale of the third season aired. The series is the latest of Fox’s shows to bite the dust, following the recent announcement that 9-1-1 is also being dropped, although that series is potentially heading to a new home.
A statement released by Fox said:
“We are very proud of ‘Call Me Kat.’ But, unfortunately, the audience response to it was not as strong as we had hoped. We are thankful for our partnership with Warner Bros. Television, That’s Wonderful Productions, Sad Clown Productions, BBC Studios, Mayim Bialik, Jim Parsons and the entire cast and crew for their work and dedication to ‘Call Me Kat.’
The series stars Mayim Bialik and is inspired by the British sitcom Miranda, about a woman struggling to prove she is able to live a happy life as she approaches her 40s as a single woman. The cast of the series also includes Cheyenne Jackson, Julian Gant, Kyla Pratt and Swoosie Kurtz. Last year, the show was hit with tragedy when series regular Leslie Jordan died after taking ill at the wheel of his car and crashing it into a building.
The show was already starting to see declining ratings, and it is believed that the WGA writers strike may have been the final decider in the cancelation of the show.
News of Leslie Jordan’s unexpected death came back in October 2022, but the actor continued to appear on screen as Phil in Call Me Kat until his last episode on December 1.
A month later the character’s exit was addressed in the series, with Bialik speaking to EW about the loss of Jordan to show
“He was a fabulous, fabulous person. And the ability to both celebrate him and honor him in a way that we hope is respectful was really our goal. For us, we’re still grieving. Grief is a full process, and I think there’s a level of authenticity that we feel we want to have as actors. And I’m grateful that Warner Brothers and Fox and Jim and Maria were able to let us have that. We’re humans and we lost our friend. We lost our little buddy,”
Although Jordan’s passing has not been integral in the cancelation of the series, the loss of such a fan-favorite character, in addition to the other issues faced by the show, it certainly would not have helped a renewal cause. While there is always a chance that the show could see a revival sometime in the future, for now, Call Me Kat has delivered its last laugh.
