A comedy career spanning less than three years, Jiaoying Summers has not only been the busiest comedian of the pandemic era but she’s also been one of the most successful businesswomen in comedy entertainment. One of the hottest up-and-coming Asian American females on the comedy scene, Jiaoying is one of the most popular comedians on TikTok with more than 1 million followers, 21.6 million likes and over 300 million views.
Summers is the owner of The Hollywood Comedy Club in Los Angeles, California and inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame.Jiaoying is considered the trailblazer in building up the Hollywood underground comedy scene. She performs 10+ shows a week headlining regularly at The Hollywood Improv and The Laugh Factory and produces 8 shows weekly across her clubs in LA and Pasadena.
She is the founder of THC Tour, which brings in the best comics touring nationally. In 2022, it was announced that Summers is set to release her 30-min comedy special as part of Peacock TV’s first stand-up comedy series entitled Comedy InvAsian 2.0.
In this episode titled Too Pretty For Comedy, Jiaoying is joined by the wonderful and hilarious Erica Rhodes.
They begin the podcast by talking about their experiences with men telling them how they are “too pretty for comedy”, then talk about the benefits of age and aging out of getting creepy comments. The two then talk about why they don’t relate to Taylor Swift and why they prefer Amy Winehouse. They then compare mothers and realize that their moms could be best friends because they both insult them when they try to show them love. They talk about why guys should never try to be funny on dates, having a sister, and the colorism that exists in Asia. They compare acting to comedy and talk about how the beauty of comedy is that you can’t sleep your way to the top. Erica talks about her path to doing stand-up comedy, Jiaoying shows Erica her tattoos, and then the two talk about how much they love Janis Joplin. Jiaoying ends the podcast by talking about some of her most painful moments as a parent, and she gets emotional when she tells Erica about how she has successfully supported her children with her hard work and success in stand-up.
She produced and starred (with Ray Wise and Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland) in the short film Posey which premiered at the 2013 Idyllwild Cinema Fest and made the festival rounds, garnering many awards. Erica was also nominated by the 2015 Los Angeles Short Film Festival as “Best Actress” for her work in The Platinum Plan. Recent TV credits include ABC’s Modern Family, Fox’s New Girl, IFC’s Comedy Bang Bang and Comedy Central’s @ Midnight and Why? With Hannibal Buress. Erica has also guested on The Howard Stern Wrap-up Show on Sirius XM after being named on his site as number one of the top nine comics to watch.
Erica co-hosts Bil Dwyer’s Stardumb!, a game and talk show comedy hybrid that has sold out three times at San Francisco Sketchfest, and stars major guest comedy players like Zach Galifianakis, Simon Helberg, Oscar Nunez, Adam Scott, Mike White, and Maria Bamford. She is also a fast-rising standup comic with appearances on Comedy Central’s @ Midnight, AXS’ Live at Gotham and the syndicated Comics Unleashed. In 2015, she performed standup at San Francisco Sketchfest, the Moontower Comedy Festival (Austin, TX), the Blue Whale Comedy Festival (Tulsa, OK), and the Boston Comedy Festival.
