The Family Plan has broken a streaming viewership record. The new movie is an action comedy that stars Mark Wahlberg as family man Dan Morgan, whose past as a top assassin catches up with him, forcing him to escape with his family on a road trip to Las Vegas. The Apple TV+ exclusive movie, which was directed by Years and Years and Ballers‘ Simon Cellan Jones, features an ensemble cast that also includes Michelle Monaghan, Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby, Saïd Taghmaoui, Maggie Q, and Ciarán Hinds.
Per Deadline, Mark Wahlberg’s The Family Plan has shattered a record for the streaming service. Apple TV+ has announced that the title had the most-watched debut for any movie on the service. Six days into its release, they are now reporting that it is the most-watched movie in the history of the streamer.
Apple TV+ is still building out its slate of original movies, so there are only a handful of other titles for The Family Plan to compete with for this record than on more robust streamers like Netflix or Prime Video. However, Apple has still put out some notable titles, including the Chris Evans and Ana de Armas vehicle Ghosted and the Best Picture-winning CODA. Succeeding over those and other titles has made the possible Family Plan 2 seem much more likely to become a reality.
So far, there is no real precedent for Apple TV+ originals to get sequels. None of their previous feature-length outings have gotten sequels at the time of writing, though they are currently in development on a sequel to the 2020 movie Greyhound, which starred Tom Hanks as a World War II naval commander. They are also behind the upcoming Henry Cavill spy movie Argylle, which comes with the possibility of expanding into a full action franchise should it become a hit.
Given the precedent that Apple TV+ is now setting as it expands its streaming library, a sequel to The Family Plan seems entirely likely. However, the movie may face some issues getting off the ground due to Wahlberg’s schedule, which includes shooting or promoting upcoming projects such as Arthur the King (which was also directed by Jones), The Union, Flight Risk, and Play Dirty. If the star’s schedule can be wrangled properly, though, it seems probable that Family Plan 2 will hit streaming within a few years.
