Comedian Kiran Deol has announced that her debut comedy special, JoySuck, is set to premiere via Comedy Dynamics on Tuesday, April 8th.
In the hour filmed at Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles, Deol tackles a landscape which can seem grim, when plenty of things seem to suck. Between the pandemic, inflation, and our era’s crazy politics, the comedian offers an alternative: find the JOY, despite the SUCK.
Said Deol, “This is a special made exactly for times like these — to find the light and get back to your joy, no matter what dark things may be happening. I hope its message offers a touchstone and way to cope — by taking tough situations and making them funny.”
An actress and a filmmaker, as well as a comedian, Deol was most recently seen leading the zombie flick Didn’t Die, directed by Meera Menon, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film follows her character, Vinita, who hosts a snarky post-apocalyptic podcast during a zombie apocalypse, using ironic distance to mask her fears as she broadcasts to a dwindling audience. The story takes a turn when Vinita’s philandering ex-boyfriend, Vincent (George Basil), arrives unexpectedly with a baby, challenging her emotional defenses.
As a comedian, Deol has headlined the New York Comedy Festival and the Kennedy Center. She’s also previously been seen in NBC’s Sunnyside, as well as the cult horror comedy Destroy All Neighbors opposite Alex Winter and Jonah Ray Rodriguez, and will be seen coming up in Disney’s Freakier Friday. The co-host of Crooked Media’s Hysteria podcast, Deol garnered a News & Documentary Emmy nomination and an IDA Award for her short doc Woman Rebel examining the Nepalese Civil War. Previously writing on the CBS/Netflix TV series Among Us, with several projects currently in development.
