The UCB Annex hosts a different kind of open mic where comedians receive real-time feedback, tags, and punch-ups.
Stand-up comedy is built on trial, error, rewrites, and occasionally having another funny person tell you exactly what your joke is missing.
Comedian Beth Stelling puts that process front and center in The Punch-Up Open Mic, now streaming on YouTube.
Hosted by Stelling alongside special guest comedian Sean O’Connor, The Punch-Up Open Mic takes place at the UCB Annex in Los Angeles and offers a collaborative spin on the traditional comedy open mic.
Instead of comics simply performing their material and leaving the stage, participating comedians get an opportunity to workshop their jokes in real time. Performers bring everything from brand-new ideas and unfinished premises to material already taking shape, while Stelling and O’Connor listen, react, and offer constructive feedback designed to help make the jokes stronger.
Whether it’s suggesting a new tag, finding a better angle, tightening a setup, or discovering another direction for a premise, Stelling and O’Connor provide an inside look at one of the most important—and rarely seen—parts of stand-up comedy: the writing process.
The result is part open mic, part comedy workshop, and part behind-the-scenes examination of how jokes evolve from an idea into material ready for the stage.
Stelling brings her accomplished comedic perspective to the room while creating an atmosphere where experimentation is encouraged rather than punished. Alongside O’Connor, she demonstrates how collaboration between comedians can uncover unexpected punchlines and help performers recognize possibilities within their own material.
The Punch-Up Open Mic also gives comedy fans a chance to experience stand-up from an entirely different perspective. Rather than only seeing the polished final product, viewers get to witness the creative process—the awkward beginnings, promising premises, spontaneous discoveries, and small adjustments that can completely transform a joke.
For aspiring comedians, comedy writers, and anyone fascinated by what happens before a joke reaches a comedy special, The Punch-Up Open Mic offers an entertaining glimpse inside the craft.
