Comedian Ralph Barbosa is set to exec produce and star in Swap Meet, a half-hour animated comedy series in development at Hulu from writer-EP Isaac Gonzalez.
Hailing from Sony Pictures Television and 20th Television Animation — with the former serving as lead studio — Swap Meet finds down-on-his luck Ralph (Barbosa) working with the Cortez’s – his aunt’s brash, proudly blue-collar Mexican American family that work different jobs at the Eastgate Swap Meet, a delightfully low-rent retail paradise with an infinite amount of goods and services.
The project sold as a pitch, with Blake Griffin, Ryan Kalil, Noah Weinstein also set to exec produce for Mortal Media.
Barbosa returns to Hulu with Swap Meet after seeing the streamer serve as distributor of his latest hour of stand-up, last August’s Ralph Barbosa: Planet Bosa.
Word of the project comes at a dynamic time in animation. Recent highlights include Hulu ordering Deano from Dean Thomas & David Ferrier; Netflix greenlighting Brian Tyree Henry’s Bass X Machina and ordering another adult animated series, Dang!; and Adult Swim greenlighting My Two Cars from Dan Licata & Joe Pera. Additionally, Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky & Adam B. Stein inked a deal to direct an animated Venom for Sony, Sycamore Studios announced a new Madeline movie after acquiring animation rights, and Netflix launched development on adult animated comedy series Anchivo Motors.
Prior to Planet Bosa, Barbosa put out the Netflix special Cowabunga, which ranked as the #3 TV show on Netflix during its first week on the platform in October 2023. Previously teaming with Gwen La Roka on the Max comedy special, Entre Nos: The Winners 3, the rising comic has also put out a set for the digital series Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring, which has garnered 7 million views on YouTube, as well as a Don’t Tell Comedy set, which has done the same.
Set to launch his nationwide The Red 40 Tour in March, with tickets now on sale
