Alongside A24, Jimmy Tatro and Dan Lagana have sold HBO on Lifties, an ensemble comedy series set in the snow.
Further plot details are under wraps. Tatro will star in the series, which he’s co-writing and exec producing alongside Lagana, with A24 as co-studio. The project reunites Lagana and Tatro following their work on American Vandal, an Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning mockumentary for Netflix, which ran for two seasons.
Lifties comes to HBO as the premium cabler looks to sort its next chapter in comedy, following the conclusion of such lauded series as Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Righteous Gemstones. Currently airing the second season of Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal, HBO has put a lot of focus on comedy of late, with orders for The Chair Company from Tim Robinson, an untitled codependent friend group comedy from Rachel Sennott, and another untitled series pairing Steve Carell with Ted Lasso‘s Bill Lawrence. Most recently, they set Robby Hoffman to co-write and star in Unentitled following her standout turn as Randi, the eccentric assistant to talent managers Jimmy and Kayla, in the latest season of Hacks.
One of today’s rising comedic stars, both in front of and behind the camera, Tatro is currently shooting a role opposite Will Ferrell and Zac Efron in Judgment Day, Amazon MGM Studios’ courtroom comedy from director Nick Stoller. Recently, he also wrapped on Scream 7 and Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice for 20th opposite Vince Vaughn. One of the key creatives behind mockumentary The Real Bros of Simi Valley and its recent feature continuation at Roku, Tatro has also recently been seen starring in the Sundance breakout Theater Camp from Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman.
Lagana most recently came aboard to co-write and produce The Breadwinner, TriStar’s comedy starring Nate Bargatze, which this morning announced the addition of Mandy Moore and more to its cast. He co-wrote and exec produced Rudy Mancuso’s Música for Amazon, prior to that showrunning on American Vandal at Netflix. He also co-created and showran Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous for MTV, which launched the career of Bo Burnham.
